As the end of the year approaches, many of us are thinking about goals for 2023. I’m not sure who will admit this but for me the goals I set usually fall by the wayside after the first few months of the year. Here are some tips to help you be successful in your goals for 2023:

1. Prepare for the changes needed to reach your goals

Because change doesn’t happen overnight, you will want to review your current year goals. During the review, acknowledge the progress made towards the goal, the challenges you faced and what you want to continue to work on. This assessment may help you create more specific goals for the new year.

2. Have a manageable number of goals

We all have our limits. Be honest with yourself about what you are capable of focusing on. If you split your focus in too many areas you will barely see progress in any of the areas. It is okay to have 1 to 3 goals that you’re focused on. This allows you to truly give it the time needed for you to make progress. You aren’t able to fix everything at once, so take your time and choose what you want to focus on first.

3. Write your goals down

Writing down your goals is helpful because it helps you clarify what you want to achieve. You will make decisions about what you write down and are more likely to be precise with your words.

4. Make your goals SMART

SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-sensitive. Specific goals are detailed instead of general. Measurable goals are quantifiable. Attainable goals are possible and challenging. Relevant goals are about you and your priorities. Time sensitive goals are reached within a specific time frame.

5. Review your goals regularly

Schedule a time monthly to review your goals and check in with your progress in advance. If you aren’t thinking about your goals, it is likely you aren’t working towards your goals.

6. Quickly get back on track when you fall off track

Mistakes and setbacks will happen in this process. Change is not easy, but it’s worth it. Do not get discouraged when you make a mistake. Be honest with yourself and get back to working towards your goal.

7. Accountability Partner

Sharing your goals with someone helps because you are no longer going at it alone. Find someone that has similar goals and is willing to meet with you consistently to check in on progress. Your progress will not always be positive, it's okay to acknowledge setbacks along with the progress. Through it all, remain positive.

While you enter the process of setting goals for the upcoming year, be sure to take these tips into consideration to maximize your success throughout 2023. Realize that each year is about growth and sticking to consistency with your goals. I wish you all the best of luck in the coming year!
